Beating the Air – Week 8 / February 16th

2015Devotional

“Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I
fight: not as one who beats the air.”
1Corinthians 9:26

Why is it that straight talk, honesty, truth and reality are avoided at all costs in our world today? Who or what is gaining from this modern day phenomenon of constantly ducking issues? Better still, what are we so afraid of? Paul the Apostle, addressing a different context, uses an illustration that remains powerful and pertinent for our time. He says that, “Thus I fight, not as one who beats the air.” It strikes me that in many areas of our world today, including Israel, there is much “fighting that beats the air” and much running with “uncertainty.”

That is, the real issue is never addressed and the real solution is thus never applied. Instead “double speak” and political correctness at every level prevails while on the ground evil advances unchallenged and unchecked. Indeed we’ve got so clever at “beating the air” that we actually believe our self made deceptions! So, people who murder in the name of Allah, crying out Allah Aukbar, quoting verses from the Koran and implementing Sharia Law are not Muslims!! The carnage of their terrible deeds lies all over the world from the Middle East to Africa, South East Asia, Europe and America buy they are not Muslims. No, the people who have to be watched and warned are the Christians because of what they did one thousand years ago!

Take for instance the recent war between Israel and Hamas: The real enemy in this fiasco was Iran. The whole world knows this and even talks about it from one TV talk show to the next; but did Israel or the international community deal with this issue effectively? The answer is no! Instead there was much “beating of the air” but “the beast” is not only still alive but actively rearming for another more deadly assault. And, by the way, this is not to suggest that a military solution was and is the only one on the table. Most certainly, the military option, as Israel has now found out, could have been better applied but there are many other firm options that the players could have applied in order to “kill the beast.” Even as I write this article Iran and Syria are channeling missiles and advanced weaponry to Hezbollah on Israel’s northern border and now also on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights. The whole world knows it but “beats the air.”

What about Iran’s nuclear ambitions? You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that the world, if it continues in its present direction, is once again “beating the air”. In fact Iran’s double speak in this regard is humiliating the whole international community including the USA. The spirit of appeasement has gripped much of Europe and the wider world resulting in much “beating of the air” and then, in the end, when Iran finally acquires “the bomb”, they will throw their hands up in dismay and say, “How did this happen?’ It will happen because we have not learned to “hit the target” and because the West has lost the will to confront evil and thereby defend its own civilization. Indeed, the very nature of evil is no longer understood in the West because the moral compass that defines it, namely the Ten Commandments, has been discarded. It was the Apostle Paul who also wrote that “by the law comes the knowledge of sin.” (Romans 3:20)

Moreover, let’s look at the so called Palestinian/Israel conflict. The truth is that for nearly three decades now the world, and even elements in Israel, has refused to acknowledge that the real agenda being played out by the Palestinians is the total destruction of Israel. This is also true of the so called moderate Palestinians. Poll after poll in the region proves this and the respective Charters of the PLO and Hamas state it clearly. Yasser Arafat, an Egyptian, was the crowned moderate of the nineties and the early 2000s. He was feted all over the world from the White House to the United Nations and was even awarded the Nobel Peace Prize! The reality, as we knew then and all know now, is that he was committed, as ever, to the destruction of Israel. He was in fact an unreformed terrorist and the father of modern day terrorism.

There was much evidence pointing to this fact but it was all ignored in the interests of “beating the air.” Believe me nothing has changed except that hundreds of Israelis have lost their lives and the carnage will continue. Kassam rockets rain down all the time on Israeli towns and villages but the “beast” is never effectively dealt with. Military action and political will appears to be hamstrung and the man in the street pays the price and bears the brunt of all of this.

Men of courage and integrity are nowhere to be found and, as a consequence, truth is trampled on the ground while inept politicians continue to hold grand and pompous meetings in the capitals of the world where they do nothing more than “beat the air” and “run with uncertainty.” Thankfully, as Daniel stated 2600 years ago, “There is a God in heaven” and His name is not Allah but Elohim because He is a God of love!

Zephaniah’s Remarkable Prophetic Vision – Week 6 / February 5th

Zephaniah’s Remarkable Prophetic Vision – Week 6 / February 5th

2015Devotional

“Sing, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O Israel! Be glad and
rejoice with all your heart, O daughter of Jerusalem!
The Lord has take away your judgments, He has cast
out your enemy. The King of Israel, the Lord is in your
midst; you shall see disaster no more. In that day it
shall be said to Jerusalem: Do not fear; Zion, let not
your hands be weak. The Lord your God in your midst,
the Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with
gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice
over you with singing.”
Zephaniah 3:14-16

This, infrequently preached upon book of the Hebrew Scriptures opens with a dire warning to Israel and indeed the world of impending judgment. The Day of the Lord is coming and it will “settle all scores” justly and “put the record straight’ based on truth. All people should fear since it is coming and the wickedness of our world is hastening its arrival. This is the one thing that surprises God because He knows nothing about wickedness because He is holy, sinless and perfect. Its intensity requires that God deal with it and even shorten the days (Matthew 24:22).

The prophet Zephaniah also has holds a message of burning judgment against Judah/Israel because of her rebellion against God and wickedness (1:18).

The only way of escape, not out of it but through it, will be:
1. To seek the Lord with determination.
2. To rejoice in justice and the doing of that which is right.
3. To embrace God’s righteousness; imputed and imparted….and,
4. To clothe oneself in humility.

The Day of the Lord fell upon Judah/Israel in 586 BC when the Babylonians invaded the land of Israel and destroyed Jerusalem with its beautiful temple. This is what God did to His heritage and He will do it again because He is the Lord and He does not change (3:8). Israel however, though she will be judged in part, will be saved out of a terrible judgment that is going to befall the whole world. She will, on that day, be a meek and humble people; free from terrorism, violence and war and she will become, and be, the admiration of the world and the recipients of its blessings (3:11-15)

Having painted this picture, the prophet then launches into a remarkable prophetic eulogy that recounts the goodness of God to Zion (3:14-20). The picture is one of a perfect and blessed restoration and it thus give us an insight into the remarkable love that God has for all His people including Church. Paul wrote that these have been written about Israel as an example of how God, by Jesus Christ, will deal with us (1 Corinthians 10:11).

In terms then of Israel; we are told that His people should:
1. Sing for joy….and;
2. Be strong in the Lord…..because God will:
3. Cast away their enemies.
4. Save them.
5. Rejoice and sing over them.
6. Gather them from all nations….and;
7. Give them fame.

Israel enjoys a destiny that is incredible and sure and her present trials will fade away as God her Savior delivers her and gives her true peace; that which is temporal and eternal. We are of course called to pray for her and we do so in the light that victory is sure and all nations will recognize it and proclaim it. What a great God we serve!

Also, these things are an encouragement for all of us since they teach us that God cares for us and loves us and; if we live as He by His grace in Christ enables us to live we too will enjoy His abundance joy and blessing. Our station in life is not determined by the world but by a God Who sent His only Son into the world to die for us. He spreads a table of good things before us in the presence of our enemies! (Psalm 23) Zephaniah’s vision is remarkable, blessed and fearsome. The state of our hearts will determine what part applies to us. Be strong in Jesus!

“Who Are These” – Week 5 / January 25

2015Devotional

“Then one of the elders answered, saying to me,
“Who are these arrayed in white robes, and where
did they come from?” And I said to him, “Sir, you
Know.”
Revelation 7:13-14a

John, escorted by one of the angelic elders, sees a vast multitude of people, of every tribe and tongue, standing before the throne of God. He is thus overcome with awe at this spectacle and subsequently hears the “elder” escorting him ask the question, “Who are these?” The angelic answer to this question is worthy of our thoughtful meditation.

1. They are a suffering people (V14b)
With John, we are told that they have come out of the “Great Tribulation.” The immediate lesson we learn is this, that to be a follower of Jesus does not mean that one is freed from persecution and difficulty. Like their Lord they are a people of sorrows and so we are reminded that life is not easy at the best of times but especially if one elects to reject the values of the world and follow Jesus. This is an uncomfortable truth for many Christians to swallow today but it is vital that we learn it.

2. They are a cleansed people (v14c)
It is important to notice that this fact, in context, is set before us after the testimony to their suffering in the great tribulation. The reason is clear; for these Christians the trials of life and those associated with following Jesus, only strengthened their appropriation of Christ’s sacrifice on their behalf. Their robes here are a picture of their lives which are dirty and thoroughly polluted by ingrained sin. Only the blood of Jesus, and nothing else, can wash them clean. This is true for everyone; only Jesus can save us and Jesus’, once for all spilt blood, makes us “accepted in the beloved.”

We should meditate on these things carefully especially as we see so many of our brethren in the world facing great tribulation. So, the question we should ask is, “Who am I?

We are then told that the heavenly response to the faithfulness of Jesus’ people will be:
1.They will dwell before the throne of God. (V15a)That is, they will reign with God in Christ.
2. They will serve the God of the universe day and night forever in His temple. (V15b) That is, they will enjoy God’s powerful presence forever.
3. They will forever be freed from life’s pains, sorrows and difficulties. (V16) That is, they will know God’s perfection……and,
4. They will forever walk and talk with Jesus and have within them a fountain of everlasting joy. (V17) That is, they will experience God’s supernatural life forever.

Sadly, a deviant teaching in the church today has assured believers that they are only destined for faith, wealth, well being and prosperity. As for the notion of “great tribulation”, they have been assured that they will not be around on earth for this. The Bible warns that a great falling away or apostasy is coming and I have no doubt that one of the reasons for this is, false teaching on what it means to truly be a Christian and that’s why the question, “Who are these?” is so important for all of us.

2015 – Week 1 / December 29th

2015Devotional

“Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are
unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak,
be patient with all. See that no one renders evil for
evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good for
yourselves and for all. Rejoice always, pray without
ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will
of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the
Spirit. Do not despise prophecies. Test all things, hold
fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.
I Thessalonians 5:14-22

As we enter another year we should be careful that we do not fall into the trap, as many do, of misplaced hope. This is relatively easy because we all desire and look forward to a year of peace, prosperity, good health and general well being. But, sadly, our world is not like that and, if anything, it is a growing mess or, as we say in Hebrew, a balagan gadol! So, what is there to be glad about and to look forward to in the 2015? The answer is, “much”, if you are a follower of Christ. Our expectation of good things is not sourced from the world, because it and its lusts are passing away (1John 2:15-17) , but they are sourced from Christ. He is our joy and blessing and our hope is anchored in His presence with us and in His second coming. For the true Christian this is our only foundation upon which we can and must build our lives in 2015. This is a sure hope and it drives us forward to appropriate more of Christ in our lives so that we may be conformed to His image (Ephesians 4:11-13). These are the things that must take first priority in our hearts as we enter another year. The world system with its false promises of peace (1Thessalonians 5:1-3) is under the control, for the present, of the god of this age (1John 5:19); the Devil, and so, if you think that things are going to get better you are misguided and your hope is misplaced. James wrote in chapter two and verses eleven to thirteen:

“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to
all men, teaching us that, denying ungodly and worldly lusts,
we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present
age looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of
our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.”

This in no way means that we should withdraw from the world and abandon it to its fate; no we are to engage it positively and powerfully as the early Church did in order to proclaim the saving message of Jesus. A sinking cruise ship is not just abandoned as every effort is made to make sure that all its passengers are safely evacuated from it. In like manner; we influence the world by being salt and light. This means our presence retards the pace of decay and gives instruction about the only true path and way of salvation. Indeed, we do all that we can to make our world a better place but our hope and confidence is not in it but in Jesus who died to save it. Our real focus is upon a “new heaven and earth wherein dwells righteousness.” The Apostle Peter had this right when he wrote in his second epistle:

“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in
which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and
the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and
the works that are in it will be burned up. Therefore, since
all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons
ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for
and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of
which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the
elements will melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we,
according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new
earth in which righteousness dwells.”
2 Peter 2:10-13

It is thus very important that we begin the year 2015 right and with a renewed dedication to fix our eyes upon Jesus, Who is the “author and finisher of our faith.” To fix one’s eyes upon a politician or political structure or anything else will be futile and in the end disappointing. We must follow Christ and invite others to emulate and join us as we put our faith and trust in Him. He is coming soon and He will set up a kingdom that will never pass away; a kingdom in which men will learn war no more and true peace, coupled with the glory of God, will cover the earth. It is this day that we are “working” for because it is coming.

Today, the “birth pangs” of the approaching kingdom of God are everywhere to be seen; in Israel, the Church and the nations. Great darkness is covering the earth but it will be swept away by the Son of God as He comes in great power and glory to the Mt. of Olives. So, be strong, follow Christ and be filled with joy. In this context I want to wish you all very blessed and Jesus filled 2015!

Seeing Through a Glass Darkly – week 2 / January 4th

2015Devotional

“For now we see through a glass darkly, but then
Face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall
Know just as I also am known.”
1Corinthians 13:12

As we begin a New Year it is good to be reminded that we are on a glorious pilgrimage. This journey with Christ gives us all the power we need to make it but it only gives us hints of what is to follow in eternity. This is done to help us deal with what really matters for the present and this means overcoming our carnal natures and appropriating Christ. (Galatians 5:16-26)

While we have “all that we need for life and godliness in Christ” (2 Peter 1:2-3) there is one thing that God cannot give us and that is a willing heart. Thus scripture everywhere exhorts us to obey Jesus, live for Jesus, love Jesus and be faithful to Jesus. It also tells us to guard our hearts lest bitterness and un forgiveness (Hebrews 12:12-17) creep in and retard our journey heaven-ward. So, the Christian has to harness his will like Bunyan’s Pilgrim but then he or she also has to fight the good fight of defeating the powers of darkness who are constantly waiting, like a hungry lion, to bring them down (1Peter 5:8-11).This is not a mock battle but a very real one and we each one have to face it in 2015.

Paul therefore writes that we are to “forget what lies behind us” and press forward, with renewed joy and willingness, to know Christ (Philippians 3:7-14). In this regard, as he writes to Timothy, he says that we are to be like farmers having patience but ever attending to our “spiritual crops”. Or, we are to be like soldiers, fully equipped and ready for the battle and we are to be like athletes running, well focused, for the finishing line. These are all pictures of what it means to steady our hearts and minds on Christ (2Timothy 2:1-7).  Anything other than this will not do and, by the way, if you have stumbled and fallen, determine to put this behind you, get up immediately and press on. Jesus loves you, will forgive you, but you must press on.

The change of the year, in one way, means nothing but in another way it means everything. That is, you can use this New Year as a catalyst to make changes and to determine that you will henceforth focus the eyes of your heart on Jesus, the Author and Finisher of your faith.

So, while we cannot see the fullness of what we are headed for because we look through a glass darkly we can see enough to know that our God has prepared great things for us who love Him; and indeed the half has never yet been seen or told. This is amazing and makes serving Him a real joy and blessing. However, what is more wonderful is that we shall finally see Him as He is. This will be our real prize! Paul knew this and wrote that he expends all his will-power to know Christ and be transformed into His likeness. One day soon we shall see him as He is and that will be our chief joy. Heaven, will be the “icing on the top!”

We should then begin this year by getting our priorities right and then we shall be in a good position to reach the world, stand with Israel and bless the Church.

Happy New a Year every one!

The Ascending Lord – week 4 / January 19th

2015Devotional
The Ascending Lord – Week 4 / January 19th

“Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have
not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My
brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My
Father, and to My God and your God.”
John 20:17

We have here a very interesting verse of scripture that is not frequently commented upon. Mary Magdalene was so overjoyed at the sight of a truly risen Lord that she spontaneously moved toward Him to hug Him. There was no romantic intention in this, as some falsely assert, but just pure joy! Consequently Jesus cautions Mary and resists her “cling” because, as He puts it, He has not yet ascended to His Father. How then are we to understand these events? I believe in the following way:

1.    There is something about His physical presence on earth.

That is, His intention was to wean His followers off His physical presence. They needed to get used to the idea that His presence would now henceforth be made real to them by the Holy Spirit. He had in fact told them this. (John 16:5-14)

2.    There is something about His physical presence in heaven.
Jesus appeared to His Disciples off and on over a period of forty days; but where was He in between these appearances? (1 Corinthians 15:1-8) Was He in limbo somewhere between heaven and earth; I think not. The truth is, though He was raised from the dead the holy consequences of His atoning work on the cross had to be sealed.  He had to appear in heaven, without sin, in order to present the fruit of His once for all sacrifice, on behalf of all men, to His Father. In short in His Father’s presence He laid claim to the “voice of His spilt blood;” this “voice’ demanded that His Father forgive all men their sins upon repentance and that He see them henceforth as absolutely perfect (Hebrews 12:24). Until this was done Mary could not handle Him or cling to Him. The writer of the book of Hebrews referred to this truth in this way in Chapter nine and verses eleven and twelve:

“But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to
Come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle
not made with hands, that is, not of this creation.
Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His
own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for
all, having obtained eternal redemption. “

Jesus thus ascended to heaven immediately after His resurrection from the dead and there before His Father He presented the atoning fruits of His obedience to the way of the cross (Philippians 2:5-8). Mary could not touch Him until this was done. He then came and went and appeared to His followers many times.  As for “The Ascension” forty days after His resurrection; this was the final return of Jesus to heaven and by it He would be exalted to the right hand of God and pour out upon His disciples the very life of God by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:33-35)

3.    There is something about the need of His physical appearance amongst His disciples.

Before His final ascension Jesus appeared many times to His followers. They would be tasked with carrying His message of the cross, and the power of the resurrection, into the world (Acts 4:33). By these Jesus had once and for all conquered death and His disciples needed to be thoroughly convinced of this. This foundation had to be laid in their lives in order to propel them into a very hostile world; in order to give them authority as they preached and in order to sustain them in great trials and persecutions. It did and most of them died for it!

All this means that we too must understand the message of the cross, have a real experience of Jesus and be empowered by the Holy Spirit. Mary Magdalene reminds us of the most holy and wonderful atoning work of Jesus and that His resurrection holds real hope for all people who are held captive by the fear of death. (Hebrews 2:14-15)

Jesus’ Word of Exhortation – Week 3 / January 12th

2015Devotional

“Behold, I am coming quickly! Hold fast what
you have, that no one may take your crown.”

Revelation 3:11

The above verse, taken from Jesus’ message to the Seven Churches of Asia, upon closer inspection, constitutes a real challenge to all of us. It has a number of components and we can look at these individually and learn some important truths from them. So then, let’s dissect this verse in the following way:

1. Behold!
In other words Jesus is saying, “Listen to this!” He is therefore going to say something very important and He doesn’t want His people to miss it.

2. I am coming quickly!
Some may think that after 2000 years this promise is a bit hollow; but it is not. The truth is, the prospect of His coming keeps our spiritual lives sharp and healthy. Jesus is coming quickly and if this was true 2000 years ago then how much more today when we see the signs of His soon coming everywhere. Just think, we are that generation that has witnessed the restoration of Israel and the building up of Zion. These things are remarkable, they are vouched for in the Word of God and we are the only generation that has witnessed them.

3. Hold fast what you have!
In other words, do not go backwards in your spiritual development but stay at the place of spiritual maturity that God in Christ has brought you to. Paul emphasized this in his letter to the Philippian Church (Philippians 3:12-16). The dedicated Christian is to always press on in his or her pursuit of Christ and must not fall back into old ways and habits that displease God. John Wesley, the 18th century revivalist, called “holding fast” the place of perfection. By this he did not mean that Christians in this life could become sinless but rather, perfection meant maintaining the level of spiritual maturity which God, by the Holy Spirit, had brought His people to. The question then is, “Are you perfect?” If you hold fast to what Jesus has already given you so far then you are!

4. That no one take your crown!
This is an amazing statement because it implies that what God meant especially for you to have can be given to another. Your crown of spiritual accomplishment can be transferred to someone else! There is a place reserved for you on earth that constitutes your potential and destiny. Jesus has a plan for your life that, if fulfilled by His grace, is your crown. This statement by Jesus teaches us that if God can’t find you worthy of and faithful to this plan He will find someone else to accomplish what He called you in the first place to do. The question then is, “Who has your crown?” Hopefully the answer will be, “I do.”

It must be remembered that these words were addressed to the Church at Philadelphia which was the only church that received a strong and ringing word of approval and endorsement from Jesus as He addressed the Seven Churches of Asia. The point is, these were healthy Christians and yet Jesus gives them a stern warning because He knows how easy it is to let one’s spiritual guard and alertness down and thereby be weakened and possibly fail. Paul, writing to the Philippian Church, states that we must renew our commitment to Christ every day. He says, “As you have therefore received Christ Jesus The Lord, so walk in Him.” (Colossians 2:6) in other words, start every day with Jesus in the way that you first began to walk with and love Him.

Perhaps the best way to respond to Jesus’ exhortation is to also remember that Paul said we are to “work out our salvation with fear and trembling.” (Philippians 2:12) So, be strong in the Lord, always be watchful and prayerful and keep your eyes on the sky because Jesus is coming soon!
